Do Work That Matters
Join Payments Technology and help build and evolve the technology that supports important payment experiences for our customers.
As a Staff Engineer, you’ll join our domestic payments engineering environment, working within the PayTo product area with a focus on mandate management and scheduled payments.
You’ll combine deep software engineering expertise with hands-on technical leadership, helping teams solve complex problems and deliver secure, resilient and scalable solutions. You’ll have the opportunity to influence architecture, engineering practices and technical capability across multiple teams.
See yourself in our team
Our domestic payments area brings together multiple engineering squads working across Australia’s payments ecosystem. In this role, you’ll provide technical leadership within mandate management, with the opportunity to broaden your influence across other squads as priorities evolve.
You’ll:
- Provide technical leadership and engineering direction across complex software initiatives.
- Lead system design and make pragmatic architectural decisions for secure, scalable and high-performance distributed applications.
- Design and evolve APIs and microservices using backend technologies such as Java and Spring Boot, Node.js and TypeScript.
- Build cloud-native solutions using AWS, Kubernetes, containerisation and Infrastructure as Code.
- Apply event-driven architecture and messaging technologies such as Kafka to solve complex integration and distributed-system challenges.
- Champion modern engineering practices across CI/CD, DevSecOps, observability, resilience and production lifecycle ownership.
- Work closely with engineers, Staff Engineers, Principal Engineers and other technology partners to establish clear technical direction.
- Coach and mentor engineers while influencing engineering standards and practices across teams.
- Contribute to the evolution of PayTo and mandate-management capabilities supporting scheduled payments.
We’re interested in hearing from people who:
You’re an experienced software engineer and technical leader who combines deep technical capability with strong architectural judgement. You’re comfortable leading through influence and expertise rather than formal people management, and you can bring engineers together to solve complex technical challenges.
Ideally, you’ll bring:
- Strong modern software engineering experience using Java and Spring Boot and/or Node.js and TypeScript.
- Hands-on experience designing APIs, microservices and distributed applications.
- Strong cloud-native engineering experience with AWS, with exposure to technologies such as Kubernetes, containerisation and Infrastructure as Code.
- Experience designing or working with event-driven architectures, ideally using Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
- Strong knowledge of CI/CD and DevSecOps, including observability, resilience and owning software throughout its production lifecycle.
- Strong system-design skills and experience making architectural decisions across complex technology environments.
- Experience providing technical leadership across multiple engineering teams or squads.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor engineers and influence technical standards beyond your immediate team.
- Exposure to AI-assisted engineering tools or practices would be valuable.
