Why This Resume Works

This resume scores well with ATS systems and design firm hiring managers because it follows three principles:

1
Project budgets and scale

Dollar values, acreage, and project counts signal the complexity you can handle. Firms want to know if you have managed $1M or $15M projects.

2
Software proficiency by name

AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, Lumion, Civil 3D. ATS and hiring managers filter for specific tools, not "design software experience."

3
Sustainability certifications and standards

SITES, LEED, and stormwater management expertise differentiate you in a market where sustainable design is a growing requirement.

Section-by-Section Breakdown

Summary

Lead with your licensure, years of experience, and project types (parks, streetscapes, residential). Include total project count, combined budget value, and your design specialty. Keep it to 2-3 sentences that position your scale and focus.

Skills

Group skills into Design Software, Technical, Standards, and Tools. List every software platform you use regularly. Include certification standards (SITES, LEED) and compliance knowledge (ADA, local codes) that employers require.

Tip: If the posting says "AutoCAD and Civil 3D required," list both separately. Do not group them as "Autodesk products," since ATS scans for each keyword individually.

Experience

Use this formula for every bullet point:

[Action verb] + [project type] + [scope/budget] + [measurable outcome]

Start bullets with verbs like: Led, Designed, Managed, Produced, Coordinated, Developed, Created. Avoid "Helped with design" or "Assisted the team."

3-5 bullets per role. Lead with your largest or most impactful projects.

Education & Licensure

List your MLA degree and PLA license with state and number. Licensure is critical for landscape architecture positions, so include it prominently. If you are LARE-passed but not yet licensed, note that as well.

Common Mistakes on Landscape Architect Resumes

  • Not including project budgets - "Designed a park" tells firms nothing about complexity. "Led design for a $12M waterfront park with 14-month timeline" shows your capacity for large-scale work.
  • Listing software without proficiency context - instead of just listing "AutoCAD," show how you used it: "Produced construction document sets in AutoCAD for 15+ projects." Context proves proficiency.
  • Omitting licensure details - firms hiring PLA-required positions filter for license status immediately. Include your license state and number, not just "Licensed Landscape Architect."
  • Focusing only on design, ignoring project management - senior roles demand team leadership, budget oversight, and client coordination. If you managed people or timelines, include those achievements.
