Why This Resume Works

This resume scores well with ATS systems and hiring managers because it follows three principles:

1
Revenue scale and team size in every bullet

Company revenue, team headcount, close cycle days, cost savings. No vague descriptions of "overseeing finance."

2
Controller-specific keywords

GAAP, ASC 606, month-end close, SOX, NetSuite, cash flow forecasting. ATS filters rely on these precise terms.

3
Clean, single-column format

Standard section headings that ATS parsers expect. No tables, columns, or graphics.

How the ATS Score Is Calculated

ATS systems evaluate controller resumes across three dimensions:

40%
Keywords

Accounting standards, ERP platforms, compliance frameworks, certifications (CPA, CMA), and financial management terms.

25%
Financial Performance Metrics

Revenue scale managed, close cycle improvements, cost savings, team size, and audit outcomes.

35%
Structure & Formatting

Proper section headings, consistent formatting, parseable layout, and appropriate resume length.

Section-by-Section Breakdown

Summary

Keep it to 2-3 sentences. Lead with years of experience and the revenue scale of companies you've managed. Include your biggest operational achievement (close cycle reduction, ERP migration, clean audits) and the certifications that qualify you for the role.

Skills

Group skills by category (Financial Management, Accounting, Systems, Leadership). Name specific ERP platforms and accounting standards you work with. Include certifications inline since CPA and CMA are often used as hard filters by recruiters.

Tip: Mirror the exact terms from the job posting. If they say "month-end close," don't just write "financial close" - use their exact phrasing.

Experience

Use this formula for every bullet point:

[Action verb] + [what you did] + [scale/context] + [measurable result]

Start bullets with strong verbs: Directed, Reduced, Led, Built, Implemented, Coordinated. Avoid "Responsible for" or "Oversaw" without outcomes.

3-5 bullets per role. Lead with revenue scale, team size, and process improvements.

Education & Certifications

For controllers with 5+ years of experience, keep education brief: degree, school, year. Always list CPA and CMA credentials prominently since many employers filter specifically for these. MBA is a strong differentiator for controller roles targeting CFO advancement.

Key Skills for Controller Resumes

Based on analysis of thousands of controller job postings, these are the most frequently required skills:

Month-End Close GAAP Compliance Financial Reporting NetSuite / SAP Budgeting & Forecasting Internal Controls (SOX) Revenue Recognition Cash Flow Management Audit Management Team Leadership

Common Mistakes on Controller Resumes

  • No revenue scale or company size - "Managed accounting department" tells hiring managers nothing about scope. "Directed accounting for a $180M manufacturer with a team of 9" shows the scale you can handle.
  • Missing close cycle metrics - month-end close speed is the single most common KPI for controllers. If you don't mention how many days your close takes or how you improved it, you're missing a key differentiator.
  • Not naming ERP systems - NetSuite, SAP, Sage Intacct, and QuickBooks Enterprise are table stakes. Many ATS systems filter for specific platforms, so list every system you have hands-on experience with.
  • No audit outcomes - controllers are expected to manage external audits. Mention clean audit opinions, reduced audit fees, or zero material findings to demonstrate your compliance credibility.
