Why This Resume Works

This resume scores well with ATS systems and hiring managers because it follows three principles:

1
Revenue and growth metrics in every bullet

AUM figures, retention rates, tax savings, new assets gathered. Every bullet ties to a measurable outcome.

2
Industry-specific keywords and licenses

CFP, Series 7/66, eMoney Advisor, tax-loss harvesting, Roth conversion. These are the terms ATS systems scan for.

3
Clean, single-column format

Standard section headings that ATS parsers expect. No tables, columns, or graphics.

Section-by-Section Breakdown

Summary

Lead with your CFP designation and years of experience. Include your total AUM and client count to establish scale, then highlight one differentiator like tax optimization or estate planning depth. Keep it to 2-3 sentences and avoid generic claims like "passionate about helping clients."

Skills

Group skills into Planning, Investments, Tools, and Licenses. Name the specific software platforms you use and list all active licenses and designations. This section is critical for ATS keyword matching.

Tip: If the job posting mentions a specific planning tool like eMoney or MoneyGuidePro, make sure that exact name appears in your skills section. Generic "financial planning software" will not match.

Experience

Use this formula for every bullet point:

[Action verb] + [what you did] + [volume or scope] + [measurable result]

Start bullets with strong verbs: Managed, Developed, Grew, Built, Created, Reduced, Mentored. Avoid "Responsible for" or "Helped with" since they obscure your individual contribution.

3-5 bullets per role. Lead with your most impressive achievements.

Education & Certifications

List your degree, school name, and graduation year. Your CFP designation, FINRA licenses (Series 7, 66, 63), and insurance licenses are essential for ATS screening. Make sure they appear in both the skills section and here for maximum keyword coverage.

Key Skills for Financial Planner Resumes

Based on analysis of thousands of job postings, these are the most frequently required skills:

CFP Certification Retirement Planning Portfolio Management Tax Optimization Estate Planning Series 7 / Series 66 Asset Allocation Client Relationship Management Financial Modeling Risk Assessment Fiduciary Compliance

Common Mistakes on Financial Planner Resumes

  • Not listing your AUM or client count - every financial planner manages assets. "$85M across 120 households" immediately tells the hiring manager your scope and experience level.
  • Omitting licenses from the resume body - if your Series 7, 66, or CFP only appears in a header graphic or sidebar, ATS systems will not parse it. List them in your skills section.
  • Writing "managed client portfolios" without specifics - include the dollar amounts, growth percentages, and retention rates. "Grew book by 35% ($22M)" is far more compelling.
  • Leaving out planning software names - hiring managers filter for specific tools like eMoney Advisor, MoneyGuidePro, or Riskalyze. Generic "financial planning tools" will not match ATS queries.
